On Monday, May 27th, WordPress celebrated its 21st anniversary. The first version of the CMS (0.7) officially launched on May 27, 2003, with features that make us smile today, given the incredible evolution of the platform. 21 Years of WordPress highlights just how far it has come.

At that time, WP 0.7 offered a texturizing engine, a link manager, XHTML 1.1-compliant templates, and the ability to create manual excerpts and use new templates.

This reminds us of how much time has passed, and Matt Mullenweg too. The co-creator of WordPress (with Mike Little), and a saxophonist at the time, was just 19 years old in 2003!

Twenty-one years later, Automattic has become a huge company with nearly 2,000 employees across 94 countries, valued at over 7.5 billion dollars.

Matt Mullenweg’s personal fortune is estimated at 400 million dollars! He can therefore afford to take a step back from operations, as shown by the sabbatical he recently took from February to early May.

During this period, he did a lot of walking, engaged in equine therapy, studied Qigong and yoga, and even caught Covid for the fourth time.

Did he also take a look at the market share of the CMS he co-created? Because in 2024, WordPress is still doing very well.

Although its market share has slightly decreased in recent months, it remains by far the number one in the market.

WordPress holds 62.7% of the market share, compared to 6.4% for its main competitor, Shopify (according to W3Techs data).

WordPress is also used by 43.3% of the world’s top million websites! Even if its growth has slowed down a bit in recent months, the CMS will continue to evolve in the coming years, as always.

The next major change to expect is the release of version 6.6, in just a month and a half. I will tell you more about this in the news. And as usual, in this new edition, you will find everything that has stirred the ecosystem over the past fifteen days.
